Understanding the Ford Bronco Sport Engine Block Heater Recall and Fire Risk The safety of our local drivers is our top priority, especially when winter temperatures drop and vehicle heating components become essential. Recently, a specific safety concern has emerged regarding the Engine Block Heater found in certain models of the Ford Bronco Sport. The primary issue involves a potential short circuit within the heater element itself. When the vehicle is plugged into an electrical outlet to keep the engine warm, this short circuit can lead to overheating. In severe cases, this heat can damage the power cable or cause engine coolant to leak, significantly increasing the risk of an under-hood fire. For families in Calcutta who rely on their SUVs for early morning commutes to work or school, an engine block heater is a practical tool for ensuring a smooth start in sub-freezing weather. However, the current recall indicates that the internal heating element may crack. Once the seal is compromised, coolant can make contact with the electrical components of the heater. If you notice a burning smell when your vehicle is plugged in or see visible charring on the heater cord, these are immediate red flags. We recommend that you stop using the heater immediately and reach out to a Ford dealership near me to verify if your specific VIN is included in this safety campaign. The specific campaign, identified as 25S52, was initiated because the engine block heater element may overheat while connected to power. It is important to note that while a 2026 Ford Bronco Sport might be equipped with an Engine Block Heater as a $190 option across all trims—including the Big Bend, Heritage, Outer Banks, and Badlands —the most recent fire-risk recalls have historically targeted earlier production cycles. However, Ford continues to monitor field data, and owners should stay informed through official mailers or by checking their 17-character VIN on the Ford owner portal. Maintaining the long-term reliability of your vehicle involves more than just addressing recalls; it requires a proactive approach to all wear-and-tear items. For instance, the salt-belt conditions we experience in East Liverpool can be tough on electrical connections and rubber components. During a recall inspection, our technicians often perform a multi-point check to ensure other systems are holding up. This is a great time to ensure your tires are ready for the season using our online tire finder tool, as proper traction is just as vital for winter safety as a reliable engine start. If you are a fleet owner or a professional using a vehicle for heavy-duty tasks, staying on top of these technical service bulletins is critical for minimizing downtime. Our finance department can even help businesses manage the costs of larger maintenance cycles for their commercial vehicles. Whether you are looking at your personal SUV or checking the safety status of used work trucks in your fleet, ensuring that every heating element and power cable is inspected by a factory-trained expert is the best way to protect your investment and your safety. Crucial Interim Safety Steps and Garaged Parking Recommendations What should you do if your Bronco Sport is part of the recall but parts aren't available yet? The most critical instruction from Ford is to refrain from plugging in the engine block heater. The fire risk is specifically tied to the heater being connected to an external power source. If the unit is not plugged in, the short circuit cannot occur, and the vehicle is safe to drive. For residents in Chester who park in attached garages, this instruction is especially important. An under-hood fire in a confined space can spread quickly, so keeping the heater unplugged removes that specific electrical hazard from your home environment. We often see owners who are concerned about cold starts during our harsh local winters without the aid of a heater. While the 1.5L I3 engine found in the Big Bend and Heritage trims is designed to handle cold weather, we suggest ensuring your battery is in peak condition to provide the necessary cranking amps. If you are currently operating a vehicle with an open recall, we recommend parking it outdoors away from structures if you have any concerns about fluid leaks or electrical smells. You can stay updated on the latest safety news and manufacturer vehicle specials that might include battery testing or winter prep packages to help bridge the gap until your recall repair is performed. For those who rely on their vehicles for more than just a commute—such as hauling gear or managing a job site—the reliability of every component is non-negotiable. If you are currently browsing our new truck inventory or looking at new work trucks, you will find that Ford’s modern engineering includes robust safety testing. However, when a component like a block heater fails to meet these high standards, following the interim safety steps is the most responsible way to protect your family and your property until a permanent fix is installed. Technical Repair Solutions and the Importance of Genuine Ford Parts The official remedy for the block heater recall involves a thorough inspection and, in many cases, a full replacement of the heating element and the associated power cable. In some instances, Ford may authorize a "disable" repair as an interim measure. This involves removing the faulty heater element and power cable and installing a threaded plug to seal the engine block. This prevents any future leaks or electrical issues while parts for the updated heater are being manufactured. Regardless of the specific path taken, it is vital that these repairs are performed using Genuine Ford Parts to maintain your 3 years / 36,000 miles New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Our service department is equipped with the specialized tools required to safely access the engine block and replace these high-voltage components. When you schedule a service appointment for a recall, the labor and parts are provided at no cost to you. Using factory-authorized components ensures that the new heater meets the exact electrical resistance and heat-shielding specifications required for the Bronco Sport’s engine bay. If you are a DIY enthusiast, we strongly discourage attempting this repair yourself; instead, you can order genuine parts through us for non-safety-critical maintenance to ensure your vehicle stays within factory specs. For owners who want a vehicle tailored exactly to their needs, including the most up-to-date safety hardware, a new vehicle custom order is a great way to ensure your SUV comes straight from the factory with the latest revisions. Whether you drive the off-road-ready Badlands with its 2.0L I4 engine or the stylish Heritage trim, keeping your vehicle serviced with OEM parts is the best way to preserve its performance and resale value. Our technicians are specifically trained to handle these recalls, ensuring the job is done right the first time. Common Questions About Bronco Sport Block Heater Maintenance ### Q: How do I know if my Bronco Sport is actually under recall? The most reliable method is to check your VIN on the official Ford recall website or through the FordPass app. Ford also sends physical letters to the last known registered address of affected owners. If you recently moved to the area or bought your vehicle used, your local dealer can quickly run a report to see if any safety actions, like the block heater replacement, are pending for your specific SUV. ### Q: Is the fire risk present even if I don't plug the heater in? No, the fire risk described in the recall occurs specifically when the heater is plugged into an electrical outlet. The short circuit happens within the electrical heating element. If the cord is not connected to power, the system is inactive and does not pose an electrical fire risk. However, you should still have the recall performed to prevent potential coolant leaks from a cracked heater element. ### Q: Can I get this recall fixed at any mechanic? Recall repairs must be performed by an authorized Ford dealership to be completed free of charge. Independent shops do not have access to the recall reimbursement system or the specific factory-authorized parts required to close out the safety campaign in Ford’s national database. Visiting a certified center ensures the repair is documented correctly, which is important for your vehicle's history and warranty. ### Q: What if I already paid for a block heater repair before the recall? If you incurred out-of-pocket expenses to repair a block heater issue that was later covered by an official Ford recall, you might be eligible for a refund. You will typically need to provide a copy of the repair order and proof of payment. Our service advisors can help guide you through the reimbursement process provided by the manufacturer. ### Q: Are other Ford vehicles like work vans or trucks affected? While this specific discussion focuses on the Bronco Sport, other models like the Maverick have faced similar block heater concerns in the past. If you manage a fleet of Transit work vans or use our truck inventory for your business, it is always wise to check the VINs for your entire fleet. If you are considering trading in your current vehicle, you can get a KBB Instant Cash Offer online, but we recommend having all recalls cleared first to maximize your value.
